Commission proposes fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2014

The European Commission has tabled its proposal on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2014. 

This is the annual proposal for the amount of fish which can be caught by EU fishermen from the main commercial fish stocks in the Baltic Sea next year. The proposals are based on scientific advice and aim to make fisheries in the Baltic Sea environmentally and economically sustainable in the short and long term. This is in line with the key principles of the recently agreed reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Commission awards 50th European Industrial Doctorate grant to VAMPIRE research into eradicating cancer blood supply

The European Commission awards its 50th European Industrial Doctorate (EID) research grant today. The €1.5 million grant is for research into new antibodies that will destroy a tumour's blood vessels and eradicate the tumour. The so-called VAMPIRE project ('Vascular Antibody-Mediated Pharmaceutically Induced tumour Resection') is led by the University of Birmingham in the UK and SomantiX, a Dutch biotech company based in Utrecht. The research is supported by associated European universities, companies and research centres including Swiss science and technology university ETH Zurich and the charity Cancer Research UK. The EID scheme is targeted at projects which bring together business and academic partners in two countries.

The European Industrial Doctorate was launched as a pilot project in 2012 as part of the Marie Curie Actions  (MCA), the European research fellowship programme. The aim of the EID scheme is to provide PhD candidates with professional experience in excellent research projects, as well as to attract more young people into scientific careers.

26-27 September 2013, Seville

The 4th European Conference on Corporate R&D and Innovation (CONCORDi-2013) will focus on "Financing R&D and innovation for corporate growth in the EU: Strategies, drivers and barriers". It will take place from 26 to 27 September 2013 at the premises of the JRC’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS) in Seville, Spain. The two-day programme will address the financial challenges affecting the link between innovation and growth of European companies.
